Check your Source to avoid embarrasment

We’ve all done it. Retweeted or Posted something without really reading it properly or without doing the most basic research to check how accurate the story is.

Today we have two more great examples of the importance of checking properly before reposting.

Celebrity campaigner Bianca Jagger suffered the more serious of the two errors when in the early hours she decided to Retweet a list of the Labour MPs that voted in favour of the Iraq War. Alas more careful study of the List would have shown that as well as the names of the MPs it contained a number of racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic references.

Ms Jagger has spent most of the hours since apologising for her oversight and the story became about her, rather than the object of her attention.

More amusing is the multiple Retweeting of the news that the Noah’s Ark Theme Park in Kentucky was washed away in a flash flood. The story is no doubt amusing and ironic. Except for one minor detail…… Its not true, it’s a fake story, made up by a satirical website with a wicked sense of humour.
Nonetheless, the post is gaining traction and being evermore Retweeted.

So the moral of the story today is to check your sources before Retweeting or Posting. Finding out the Noah’s Ark story was fake took a whole 30 seconds of searching Google.

And by the way, don’t forget to make up your own Facebook Terms and Conditions & post them before midnight! #ohmydays
