Use Social Media To Network At Events

Do you have a business event coming up and want to make a great first impression? Particularly if this is a networking event it is important that you go prepared. Prior to the event put in a few extra hours and carry out some research about the event and its attendees. Follow these quick and easy tips for networking success.

  • Check the Facebook event – is there a list of attendees? Familiarise yourself with their names. Check out their Facebook profiles. Can you see what company they work for? What about their interests? Do they post content that might be of use to you?
  • Tell others that you are attending the event; you can do this by tagging the event in your own status. This way your post will appear on the events Facebook page, the event creators and those viewing the page will be able to see that you are attending and that you are showing a keen interest.
  • You can follow a similar procedure on twitter. Use the # to search for any tweets that might have been posted about the event allowing you to identify anyone that might be attending. Similarly you can create your own tweets and apply the # to keywords so that your tweets are found by others.
  • When you are at the event there are a number of things that you can do via social media to make the event a success for you. Ask people for business cards and their social media details. LinkedIn in particular is a great social channel for connecting with other business professionals. Why not take a few photos at the event, if you know who the people are you can tag them the next day.

There are plenty of other ways in which you can use social media to your advantage prior, during and after a networking event these are just a few simple steps that can get you started.
