A few days ago we posted an article on this blog about the new SEO competition being run by http://www.v7n.com/, the aim being to be placed first in Google (organic rankings) for the search term on May 15, 2006, noon, Pacific standard time.
Surprisingly, and without really trying, we have found that in posting that entry, this blog has started to feature reasonably well for the phrase in Google.
Currently (24th January 2006), we are featuring in position 57 on http://www.google.com, position 36 on http://www.google.co.uk (the web) and position 5 on http://www.google.co.uk (pages from the UK). I will keep posting updates on our position so long as we don’t completely disappear off the face of Google.
Obviously this in not exactly pole position, but considering the little effort that was put in and the complete lack of expectation, it’s a good start and may spark a little more effort on our parts to see what we can achieve.
What it does show, however, is the power that a regularly updated blog can hold. We always try to post an entry at least once a day (Mon-Fri), and even though the vast majority of the content posted here is reproduced from other people’s newsletters and articles (correct credit is always given), it proves how much Google likes regularly updated content.
I’m not saying that we realistically stand a chance of winning the SEO competition, we have neither the time, or in fact the inclination, to go at it full tilt, but it will be interesting to see where we end up.
