We would like to warn our clients about a potential threat to your business as there have been reports of a group sending online extortion demands, with a threat of a cyber-attack.
The group who call themselves “RepKiller Team” have been demanding businesses through email to pay between £300 and £500 in Bitcoins.
If the payment is not received by a certain date and time, the group have threatened to launch a cyber-attack against the business, by automating hundreds of negative reviews online, thus severely damaging their reputation.
There are also claims that once the actions have begun, they cannot be undone and despite the group labeling themselves as “RepKiller” it is very common for fraudsters to change their tactics and use different email names.
If you do receive one of these emails, we urge you to report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or report the incident to them through their website, whether the attack is attempted or successful.
There is no guarantee that the scammers won’t launch an attack if you do pay their demands and it could result in further payment demands in the future.
You should retain all original emails from the group and maintain a timeline of the attack as all of these things can be used as evidence against the group.
